IWD 2020
Google Doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists. For the 2020 International Women’s Day Doodle, we had the great honor of being chosen as the artists. Based on the designs by the paper artists at
Makerie Studio, we created an entire paper-like mandala in 3D. The key visual consists
of 35 female figures divided into three layers representing different eras in which women have stood up for their rights.

From paper to 3D
Our team lovingly recreated Makerie Studio's intricate paper art in the digital realm, making sure that the texture, folds and nuances of the original design were faithfully reproduced.
From illustration to 3D-rendered mandala artwork
We started with the amazing illustrations by Makerie Studio, which were the main visual inspiration. The journey from illustration to final rendering was a really careful process that needed a keen eye for detail, an understanding of form and movement, and a commitment to keeping the integrity of the original paper art designs.
We put a lot of thought into each of the 35 figures and where they went in the mandala. It starts from the centre and takes us through different periods of time, showing the challenges women faced during those eras. Most importantly, the art made us think about how women have fought and evolved throughout history so that we can live the free lives we lead today. If it wasn't for these women, the world would be a very different place.
